With Coles this week adding fruit and vegetables to the year-long battle being waged over items like milk, bread, cereals and eggs, news.com.au decided to put it to the test.
Walking down the aisles of both grocery giants is a vision of sale goods and “multi-buy” discounts right across all categories with items being sold for a fraction of the price tag this time last week.
But after comparing an identical basket of 18 typical household items from Woolies and Coles - from tomato sauce and Vegemite to broccolini and bananas - the check-out result is a spectacular photo finish.
A $64.22 basket of groceries at Coles has it by a nose over $64.94 for Woolies.
That's just 72 cents between them.
In good news for shoppers, retail analysts say the supermarket price wars are here to stay. Category leader Woolies has the market clout to keep pressure on Coles indefinitely as the rival strives to steal its "fresh food" crown.
