'It looks like a Down Under free range egg yolk'

WE loathed the high-heeled ugg boots and winced at this year's Mardi Gras-inspired frock shock.

But playing it safe with our Miss World national costume also received the thumbs down from leading fashion experts last night.

While the Miss Universe Australia national costumes have been classed tacky and over the top in recent years, our Miss World Australia Amber Greasley's flowing Belluccio gown was simply deemed "boring" and "un-Australian".

Greasley unveiled the costume last night at the Cullen Hotel's Terrace Restaurant for her official send-off before heading to London tomorrow for the 61st Miss World beauty pageant.

The 18-year-old said she "loved" the national costume, designed to reflect our land and industry.

"The pearls represent our gem industry, the orange and cream colours our land and the blue underlay our coastlines," Greasley told the Herald Sun.

Fashion commentator Melissa Hoyer said the gown missed the mark.

"Nothing on the dress remotely says Australia," Hoyer said.

"It looks more like something a slim young thing would throw on for the Logies, or a gown a glam gal would wear to Rio on Mardi Gras night.

"I assume the yellow skirt represents a sensational great Aussie sunset, or a Down Under free-range egg yolk?"

Project Runway Australia runner-up and Melbourne bridal wear designer Craig Braybrook felt the costume was too run-of-the-mill.

"Boring," he said.

"This is way too safe. It looks more like the evening gown than a national costume."
